For over 25 or 30 years, I’ve held a dream close to my heart—a dream of having the perfect writing body. It doesn’t have carpal tunnel injury and arthritis, it’s eyes don’t blur and water, and it’s back is strong and straight. But that’s long ago and far away. I will instead embrace my sore back, my aching muscles, and my tired eyes and say that is an acceptable price.
And I will settle for my cozy home office. This sacred space is where my words take shape on the computer screen.
In my office, I have an essential companion—a chair that’s only a few years old. You see, my feline friends have had their way with previous chairs, using them as scratching posts. Even with a protective pillowcase slapped over the back, those chairs met their untimely end. Thankfully, my current chair has not suffered the same indignity—yet.
But my writing journey isn’t confined to the four walls of my office. You’ll often find me in my recliner, tablet in hand. Now, you might wonder why I don’t opt for a laptop. Well, it’s a simple matter of logistics—I have a lap cat. My furry friend loves to curl up on my lap, making it a tad awkward for a laptop to find its place.
And then there’s my writing fuel, the elixir of creativity that powers my wordsmithing adventures—Iced Americano. I drink not one, not two, but three of them every day. However, here’s the twist: two of those Americanos are decaf. It’s a delicate balance that keeps my energy and creativity in check.
I brew my Americanos using Nespresso capsules, and I use two capsules per drink. They offer a consistent taste, which means I don’t have to worry about that aspect while crafting my stories.
My writing day kicks off with an Americano and a refreshing walk in the park. Well, it starts with a short drive to the park, where my wife and I embark on our morning stroll. It’s a peaceful way to begin the day, surrounded by nature’s beauty and the promise of inspiration.
Upon returning home, I dive into my writing. The duration varies—sometimes it’s a solid two hours, while on other days, I find myself lost in the words for a glorious ten hours. It’s during these writing sessions that stories come to life, characters evolve, and worlds unfold.
My writing environment may have its quirks and challenges, but it’s where the magic happens. It’s where ideas flow, characters come to life, and stories take shape. And through it all, my faithful cat keeps me company, even if it means I have to surrender my lap.
Later, friend…
